September 2010 - Student Affairs and Technology (Sending Event Reminders/Invitations via Text Message))

Readers,

During the past few years, a significant amount of higher education institutions in Texas adopted electronic (text message) alert systems to communicate with their students if an emergency arises. Several universities adopted an alert system to keep their faculty, staff, and students informed of campus events. This approach, appropriately called "calendaring", sends a text message featuring reminders pertaining to athletic, social, and other events.

To find out more about their approach, read this article from Campus Technology - "Newbury Boosts Student Improvement".

September 2010 - Student Affairs and Technology (Journal of Technology in Student Affairs - Call for Manuscripts/Book Reviews)

Readers,

Our May 2010 poll indicated that many of you are interested in submitting articles for scholarly journals. One journal, The Journal of Technology in Student Affairs, is seeking submissions related to technology and student affairs/higher education. This journal is practitioner-based and it features articles that are "research-based, descriptive in nature, thought pieces, and book reviews".

Readers,

An increasing number of undergraduate and graduate college students are using technology (i.e. - iPods, Facebook, iPhones, Twitter, etc.). College students' usage of these technologies can results in benefits and disadvantages for student affairs professionals.

One article by Erin Gemmill and Michael Peterson, focuses on these advantages and disadvantages. This article, "Technology Use Among College Students: Implications for Student Affairs Professionals" explores the stress level among college students (related to technology) and the student concerns that student affairs professionals may encounter as a result of their students' stress levels.

September 2010 - Student Affairs and Technology (A Refresher/Introduction)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/deanj/
Readers,

This month's blog topic is focused on student affairs and technology!

We start this month with a great "refresher" on the different types of technology that student affairs departments can implement in their every day practices.

Licinia, a blogger for the "Student Affairs Collaborative: Know-how from peers and professionals" gives a background of current and potential applications of technology for student affairs.

Here's a link to the article - Student Affairs Application of Technology

This article covers the following:
Collaborative Applications
Online Forums
Social Networking Sites
Pod/Video Casting

This is a great article that may serve as a refresher for some of us and as an introduction for the rest of us. Despite our technological experience and comfort level, we can implement online technologies in our every day activities.

What technology does your department use?
